The Gioto dumpsite in Nakuru,which has always been full of activity with lorries ferrying waste from residential homes amidst flies, vultures in search of food with a foul smell emanating from garbage, will now be a thing of the past as the county embarks on giving it a new face.
Addressing media on Wednesday at the Dumpsite, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui in company of his deputy Dr Erick Korir and Nakuru County Director for Environment Kiogora Muriithi said the dumpsite has been a menace to the people traveling to via the Nakuru-Ravine road.
He said the county added that they have pushed the garbage far off the road besides planting trees to beautify the area.
“This particular dumpsite for the longest period has been a challenge for the people traveling to Ravine. We are therefore pushing the garbage off the road and then we shall plant trees along to address such," he said.
“We are also concerned about the community that lives around this dumpsite and we are working on a program so that they can have decent livelihood” he added.
The county boss said the county is working with hospitals to ensure no medical waste is dumped in the area.
