During an event to mark Madaraka Day celebrations at Ndumberi playground in Kiambu on Monday, Kiambu County Commissioner Esther Maina said just like drugs, the illicit brews fuel the rate of criminal activity in the region.

“Youths are the future of Kiambu County therefore church leaders, parents, teachers and development groups should come together and help preach against the vice,” she said.

She regretted that illicit brews were slowly claiming people’s lives since they contain toxic chemicals.

The officer however said that those who indulged in drinking often commit other crimes such as domestic violence, robbery and rape among others which leads to family breakups, divorce and other social evils that impeded development.

Maina advised the public to partner with the police and report those involved in selling illicit brews and other harmful drugs for action to be taken against them.

She called on the general public, and  youth in particular, to engage in other activities such as sports as a way of keeping them healthy and cushion them from illicit brews consumption.

Maina also appealed to Kiambu residents to stop brewing and consuming the illicit brews so that it discourages such business which was counterproductive to national development.

She warned the illegal sellers that the police will not relent in their fight against those found manufacturing the illicit brews.

Maina said, “You better look for some other job to maintain your families or else, the long arm of the law shall catch up with you.”
