The weekly Kisumu anti-IEBC protests have been hijacked by groups fronting different interests, Kisumu County Commissioner has claimed.
John Elungata said the protesters are now pursuing different agendas contrary to Cord’s main agenda.
Elungata said what happened in Kisumu on Monday during the protests is a manifestation that the aim is not to pressurise IEBC commissioners to vacate office.
He said local political interest has taken over to paint the current leadership of Governor Jack Ranguma negatively pointing out the destruction of county government facilities.
“The idea is to uproot county government facilities to portray that the current leadership is not working. Destroying beatifications in the city is not good,” he said.
Speaking on Saturday during a Pentecostal congress in Kisumu, the commissioner wondered why roads leading into Kisumu were closed by youth burning tyres as early as 7am if indeed it was a peaceful demonstration.
He said local politicians were also on a supremacy battle to see who has ferried more youth to join the demonstrations.
Elungata said the demonstration deviated from its original objective of a peaceful march from Kondele to the local IEBC offices to hand over a petition.
“We had intelligence reports that some politicians are using the protesters to cause destruction,” he said.
