Mombasa County Commissioner on Monday directed the closing of all entertainment joints operating near institutions of learning.

Evans Achoki said no bar will be allowed to operate anywhere within the radius of 300 metres from learning institutions.Achoki who spoke to journalists in Mombasa after overseeing the closing of such clubs in Old Town Mombasa said pupils and students need a friendly learning environment to effectively undertake their studies."In fact not all these bars have licences. We will ensure no entertainment joint operates without a licence," the county commissioner said."I have directed authorities to ensure no one runs bar business near schools and to be precise not anywhere within the radius of 300 metres from these institutions," said Achoki.He said the government will not tire until the fight against alcoholism in Mombasa is successfully fought against.Achoki issued the order about two months after former Coast Regional Commissioner Nelson Marwa ordered the closure of four strip clubs in Mombasa town saying the joints were being used as centres of trafficking young girls.During Marwa's order, young Indian and Pakistani girls were arrested in the clubs and charged with being in the country illegally.The owners of the clubs were charged with human trafficking.
