Lamu County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo has asked chiefs to ensure locals who fail to take their children to school are arrested and prosecuted.
Kitiyo said administrators who do so will be rewared and promoted.
Speaking to the press on Monday in his office, Kitiyo said a number of children dropping out of school and those at home despite reaching school going age is alarming.
"Parents have opted not to take their children to school. Anyone found must be arrested and charged in court. Crime has been higher in the region and those behind those crimes are school dropouts", he said.
Kitiyo urged the local administrators to be vigilant and ensure every child who has attained a school going age is taken to school.
