Uasin Gishu government through the Agriculture and Livestock ministry is committed to improve the quality of dairy cattle to boost milk production through the use of sexed and convectional semen.
Agriculture and Livestock minister Cyril Cheruiyot on Wednesday attributed the recent decline in milk production to poor genetics due to use of bulls which has led to in-breeding.
“To solve the issue of in-breeding that leads to poor output, the county government in this financial year has set aside Sh13 million to buy sexed and convectional semen that will enhance milk production,” he said in his office.
Cheruyiot said the semen will help in production of high quality dairy breeds that are disease resistant and produce milk in large quantities.
“The sex convectional semen is being sold through farmers cooperative societies where the prices have been subsidised by 50 per cent making it affordable to farmers,” he said.
The minister urged farmers to take advantage of the subsidised rate on sexed convectional semen to improve their breeding and in turn milk production.
