The county government of Kwale has dismissed claims it was involved in the renewal of a special mining licence for Base Titanium in the region.
In a statement, the administration instead said since 2015, it has been piling pressure on the Australian mining company to cease its expansion plans to avert tensions among the residents."Any allegations insinuating that the county government of Kwale consented and/or authorised exploration by Base Titanium for mining are not only inaccurate but also misplaced, ill conceived, and at best, a figment of the proponent's imagination," read part of the statement seen by the Standard. The response comes in the wake of accusations from local activists that the county government has colluded with Base Titanium to have the mining zone extended without consulting residents. On his part, Wiper Party governor aspirant Chirau Mwakwere, accused his rival, Governor Salim Mvurya of failing to prevent the alleged land grabbing by top Jubilee Party officials as well as mineral exploitation.Mvurya has since denied all of Mwakwere’s allegations.
