Cervical cancer patients in Kisii have a reason to smile after the county government donated treatment machines today at Kisii Level Five hospital.

This comes after more than 44,000 residents were screened and 40 found positive in either cervical or breast cancer last year across the county.

In its aim to curb further spread of cancer, the county government used over Sh1.2 million to procure the four cryotheraphy machines for early cervical cancer treatment.

Initially, the county had only two such machines, one at Kisii Level Five and the other at a private clinic in Kisii town.

Kenyenya, Marani, Bonchari and Nyamarambe Level Four hospitals will be the beneficiaries, according to the county executive in charge of health, Sarah Omache. She also promised that the remaining hospitals will receive the equipment soon.

The county executive said women in the county will now access treatment easily without travelling to Kisii town.

“This is a tremendous step for us. All women in the county will start enjoying services in our hospitals,” said Omache.

She also urged area residents to give the county government humble time for it to improve all matters related to health.

“We are doing everything possible to improve health standards in our county,” added Omache.

Also at the same function, she presented blankets, bed sheets and other non-pharmaceutical items from Kisii Governor James Ongwae meant for Suguta, Nyabioto and Itibo health centres.

County chief nurse Mellen Makone said the county government has tried to use limited resources to equip all hospitals across the county without any prejudices.

She also said the exponential increase of cancer patients is likely to reduce drastically if residents take advantage of the equipment.

“I wish to thank the government for its relentless support to matters health. I‘m quite sure cancer cases will be dealt with,” said Makone.

Accompanying the county executive were chief officer of health Dr Amis Nyamwange, Dr Geoffrey Otom and several senior health officers from the Kisii County ministry of health.
