The county government of Mombasa has donated food, mattresses and blankets to flood victims seeking shelter at the Holy Angels Catholic Church at Junda in Kisauni.Lands, Agriculture and Environment CeC Anthony Njaramba said the county government was committed to assisting and relocating the 78 families currently living at the centre.Njaramba said the Governor Hassan Joho-led government has set up different rescue centres in a bid to provide shelter to families that have been displaced by the ongoing rains.“This calamity has affected many parts of Mombasa and the county government has set up seven recue centers including this one where victims can be assisted,” said Njaramba.He urged the displaced families to remain patient as the county government works on an effective plan to resettle them in safe areas that are not prone to floods.“Every year we experience a similar problem whenever it rains and the situation seems to be getting worse. Last year we had 28 flood victims but the number has swelled to 78 and may increase to even more than a hundred if we do not address the issue on time,” he added.Over 1,600 hundred families have been left homeless with 10 people reported dead in Mbaraki, Jomvu, Mikindani and Junda areas.
