The Mombasa County Government on Wednesday launched a clean-up exercise as part of its measures to deal with the garbage menace in the city.The team led by Mombasa Environment, Waste Management and Energy CeC Dr Godfrey Nyongesa Nato and County Secretary Mr Francis Thoya, cleared garbage heaps in various parts of the city.The department of environment in the county has assured residents that it is committed with dealing with the issue of garbage to avert disease outbreaks.“We assure the residents of Mombasa that the garbage menace will be a thing of the past,” said Nato, during a clean-up exercise at Uwanja Wa Mbuzi.Nato said the clean-up exercise dubbed “Mji wetu, wajibu wetu” (our city, our responsibility) will be carried out for five days before normal collection resumes.On his part, Mr Thoya urged Mombasa residents to keep their environment clean by ensuring responsible garbage disposal. The county secretary warned against dumping garbage in undesignated areas, saying those found culpable will face the full force of the law.“I am leading from the front to clear all garbage sites and closing down all the illegal dumpsites,” said Mr Thoya.Also present during the exercise was County Chief Officer Mr Abdulwahab Mbarak.
