County Department of Youth, Gender, Sports and Cultural affairs together with representatives from National Museum of Kenya (NMK) and Sub County Administration in Mombasa conducted a public participation with Mombasa Old Town residents and stakeholders at Swahili cultural centre.
The forum chaired by the County Executive for Youth, Kevin Munywoki Kyalo aimed at collecting views that would be tabled in the coming promotion, preservation and restoration project of Old Town.
Mombasa Old Town - a gazetted heritage site, has been neglected for many years according to Kyalo.
He said the area is not treated as a world heritage site despite being in the buffer zone to Fort Jesus which is a UNESCO listed site.
"Through the department, the County in partnership with the National Museum of Kenya is set to embark on a Restoration Project that is not only targeting to uplift the face of Old Town but to also improve public amenities in the surrounding areas," said the CeC.
The project will also focus on reviving other tourist attraction sites like Ngomongo Villages in Shanzu, Bombolulu workshop among others.
