Kisumu County Government has set aside Sh30 million for the purchase of land for the relocation of the Kachok dumpsite. Kisumu City manager Doris Ombara said they have identified a 50 acre-parcel of land in Muhoroni constituency for the construction of a sanitary landfill for the waste management. Ombara said the construction of the landfill will cost the county Sh800 million. “The fund for the purchase of the land is ready and the site is suitable since it does not lie within the flight path,” she said. Ombara said they have involved all the relevant authorities to be able to come up with a site that is suitable for everyone. “We are spending Sh1 million to come up with a suitable site, we have engaged Nema and the Kenya Airports Authority, we want to roll out the project without any hiccups,” she said. She announced that the fund for the waste management project is part of the Sh4.5 billion Kisumu Urban Project financed by French Development Agency. She said once the waste management project kicks off, the town will get back its lost glory of cleanliness. Kachok dumpsite has been an eyesore for several years and efforts to set up a sanitary landfill had hit a snag. The first site was in Kisumu West next to Hayer quarry but the local people and the Kenya Airports Authority rejected the site. The local people said they did not want to site next to them as it will bring scavengers like birds and street boys besides foul smell while the airports authority argued that the site lie within the flight path.
