The locals are asking the concerned authorities to step in and act immediately to avert any danger that is posed by the free flowing water considering that it is a densely populated area.

Poor drainage system in the area has worsened the situation as the water mixes with sewage, inconveniencing the locals for the last three weeks.

“For three weeks water from the broken pipes has been overflowing. This has flooded passages in this area. Sometimes the water mixes with sewage making it hard for us to conduct our businesses normally,” said Rose Akinyi a local trader.

Others say officials from the county are aware of the problem but no action has been taken up to date. They claim to have informed them but only to given promises that are never kept.

“They only inspect if there are any irregularities by the residents regarding water usage but fail to address challenges faced by the consumers. The concerned people are aware since they are always here to connect or disconnect water supply,” said another resident.

They are now faced with the threat of water borne diseases especially among children who have turned the small streams of water into playing grounds.

Apart from repairing the broken pipes, they want worn out pipes to be replaced to avoid water wastage in future.

Earlier, there were reports in the media that water shortage in Awasi had led to residents trading water for sex as a substitute to walking long distances for the commodity.
