The County Government of Machakos has been asked to upgrade slums in Athi River in order to improve the lives of the least privileged and most vulnerable in the community.
Addressing the press in Athi River on Friday, Geoffrew Majiwa, a resident of Carton Slums in the region claimed the slums had been neglected by previous governments for decades.
“The slums have been neglected by all the governments despite the fact that they have been in existence since immemorial,” said Majiwa.
Majiwa stated that as a resident of the most vulnerable slum, he felt the pinch since had experienced the suffering and struggles residents go through to keep surviving with the ever rising inflation the country.
He said the county government of Machakos should now come in and save the situation by upgrading the slums and finding alternative jobs for the dwellers to improve their livelihoods.
According to Martin Kiliku, devolution was the only solution to the oppressed in the society since services they never received in the past could reach them through the devolved systems and functions.
He said upgrading the slums would spur the county’s economic growth, improve security and create an attractive environment and sanitation to justify the governor's famous slogan, "Machakos County is the place to be.
