The county government of Garissa has distributed ten portable ultrasound equipment valued at Sh6.5 million to seven health facilities in a bid to curb maternal and infant mortality in the region.

Speaking when distributing the equipment at Dadaab Subcounty Hospital on Monday, Health chief officer Mohammed Gure said that the new equipment will transform the health sector in different ways.

According to County reproductive health coordinator Fatuma Imaan, a good number of mothers from the region has been losing their children because of health-related complications.

She also said that machines were procured in order to enable health experts to detect different complications in good for early treatment to be undertaken.

She further said that most of the mothers rarely receive antenatal care because they are normally referred to refugee hospitals, which are not well-equipped.

“Because of the long queues and distance, some of the mothers give up on attending the antenatal clinic. This sometimes leads to complications that could have been detected and corrected earlier,” Fatuma said, as quoted by The Star. The officer also revealed that persons who will be operating the machines have been trained for effective service delivery in the end.
