A section of Garissa residents has decried over a possible outbreak of waterborne diseases because of raw sewage.
The locals want the national and county government to put in place measures to ensure that the sewage systems of different areas are working properly for the sake of their health.
According to a local daily, the effluence has been spewing for several weeks, which has compelled a number of tenants to vacate their houses in search of better places for their families.
Businesses have also been affected, with eateries being among those dealt a major blow because of unpleasant odor that has made the place unideal.
Ben Marangu, a prominent hotelier in the area, said that Garissa Water and Sewerage Company has been reluctant to deal with the matter despite residents raising concern for the past several weeks.
Landlords and landladies have also said more tenants have threatened to vacate their houses because of the mess.
Garissa Water and Sewerage Company managing director Abdi Haji assured the residents that the firm was doing its best to ensure the situation is dealt with accordingly.
“The sewer system was constructed in 1980. The population has grown since then and is overwhelming the system. We need to overhaul the system. We are also trying to unblock sewers,” he said as quoted by the Star.
