The Uasin Gishu County government is collaborating with the Lake Victoria North water services board in the cleaning of dams in the county.
According to the Water and Natural Resources Chief Officer Water Simion Kemei, already 15 dams have been cleaned with 133 currently in the process.
“Provision of water has been given the first priority in Governor Jackson Mandago's manifesto by ensuring that every household gets sufficient water in the next 5yrs,” he said after assessing the siltation of Chepkemel water dam, Wednesday.
“We are also in the process of acquiring new water masters and excavators to speed up the process of silting dams,” he added.
The chief officer said under the initiative, boreholes will be drilled in areas without a source of water.
“They include Ngenyilel, Segero Barsombe and Karona Meibeki ward which has experienced perennial water shortages,” noted Kemei.
The chief officer also urged residents of Chepkemel to plant more trees so as to adapt to the devastating climate change and to sustain the dam.
Currently, Lake Victoria North Water services board is conducting a feasibility study on the distribution of water to households.
