[Photo/Gusii Star]The County Governments of Kisii has stated that it appreciates and values Daraja Mbili market, which is the second largest open-air market in Nyanza after Kibuye in Kisumu County. To improve working conditions of traders at the market, the County Government has partnered with the National Government to upgrade it. Phase I of the project involves completion of the stalled market building at a cost of Sh204million.

The construction work includes three additional floors to house a wholesale market, cold rooms, a police post, cyber cafes, ATMs, offices, and kiosks.

The market will have loading bays and traders who currently sell their wares along the road will be relocated to the new facility. On its part, the County will construct access roads, additional sheds, washrooms and stone pitching on Rivers Nyakomisaro and Nyanchwa. However, you are aware that Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA) using funds from the African Development Bank (ADB) is rehabilitating and expanding the Ahero-Kisii-Isebania road. Governor James Ongwae negotiated successfully to ensure the County benefits from this project through the construction of markets at Daraja and Suneka. Additionally, a number of feeder roads among them Oyugis – Rioma; Suneka–Riana–Rodi; the 4km Nyamataro–Daraja Moja loop; St Stephen–Christa Marianne and Nyachenge–Ikob–Ogembo roads are set for an upgrade to bitumen standard. The stretch of road between Nyamataro and Kisii Hotel will be expanded to a dual carriageway with two service roads, two (2) meter wide walkways paved with cabro on both sides and on the market ground, an underpass at the market as well as an interchange at the Suneka junction. So the County Government cannot implement the planned developments including stone pitching and installation of cabro because the road expansion project is likely to affect them.
