Uasin Gishu County government is determined to fight armyworm infestation which has affected maize farmers in the region leading to poor yields.

CeC in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Cyril Cheruiyot says more than 20,000 acres under maize had been infested by the worm this year.

"We have embarked on a sensitization programme to train farmers on how to prevent or treat their plants if affected by the worm. We don't want our farmers to suffer again," he said in Eldoret town, Thursday.

"We want to eradicate the worm by next next. This year we are starring at massive losses.  It's sad that despite us being the bread basket of the country we still import maize," he added.

Cheruiyot said the changing weather patterns were partly to blame for the spread of the pest.

The armyworms affected farmers in Ainabkoi, Moiben and Turbo constituencies in Uasin Gishu County respectively.
