The County Government of Nakuru has announced that it will partner with environmentalists to rehabilitate Gioto dumpsite.
Speaking to the press yesterday while at his office, Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said that the initiative will also produce electricity and some raw materials for tissue papers.
"We are focusing on ensuring that this initiative turns the waste products into energy producer. The dumpsite will also help in tapping the methane gas for domestic use. The county government will also acquire an energy production and management plant from Finland," Mbugua said.
He added that the dumpsite has been an environmental disaster and it was high time that the county government rehabilitated it.
Mbugua said that the technology that they will receive from Finland will pave way for the production of green energy and also some waste recycling plants within the county.
"I have been informed by the engineers and also the professionals that are involved that over 3,000 tonnes of waste and garbage produced within the county can be used to support a power generating plant. This will create job opportunities for the youth," Mbugua said.
Mbugua added, "We want to convert waste into energy so we can have adequate power and a clean town," Mbugua said.
