The county government of Nakuru has unveiled plans to establish a regional carrot export in a bid to boost agriculture sector.

According to a local daily, the new market is expected to meet the demand of the East African Community (EAC) upon completion.

Speaking during a meeting of farmers and stakeholders in Njoro, the County Executive for Agriculture, Dr. Immaculate Njuthe, assured farmers that Governor Lee Kinyanjui’s government is committed to help farmers harvest quality produce.

She also said that the market will act as a platform educating farmers on better practices in this field.

“The reason we invited stakeholders concerned with carrot farming is in order to enlighten each other and cooperate in producing high-quality products,” she said, as quoted by a local daily.

Mr Zakayo Magara, an expert from the Agriculture Food Authority, said that Nakuru has the potential to produce food that can meet the needs of the entire region if the proper measures are put in place. He also said that a number of farmers from the region have been denied access to the market, adding that the new move will change their lives.

On his part, The County Executive for Trade, Industry, Marketing and Tourism Peter Ketyenya said that plans are underway to meet representatives from all the countries in the region.
