Youths in Siaya town have called on the county government to give them a chance to work for the county government.
Led by the county assembly member representing the youth Walter Okello, they observed that the county government does not believe in its youth.
He regretted that most of the top positions had been set aside for older people yet there were youths in the county with capacity to handle the same jobs.
He made reference to a case where name of a 72-year-old nominated by the county government was tabled in the assembly to be approved to occupy position of a CEC leaving behind youths who were equally qualified for the jobs.
“The county government’s attitude has made it difficult for the youths to have access to opportunities. The demands the county government has set as requirement for vacancies and tenders are far beyond the ability of the youths,” said Okello
He pointed out that devolution offered the best chance for youths to get employed and build their careers as well as a chance to win tenders once they had minimum required qualifications.
He therefore told the county government that for it to realise development, it should bring on board the youthful Kenyans from Siaya.
Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda at the same time challenged the county to ensure that they gave the youth chances to serve saying that currently the life expectancy rate in Siaya was 47 therefore, employing someone who is over 60 years was denying the young people chance of employment.
The MP and MCA were speaking at Nyang’oma children’s home in Bondo Sub County during a funds drive in aid of orphaned children where more than Sh 1.68 million were raised.
