Ruiru Constituency MP Esther Gathongo has called on the county government to start programmes that will empower women in Kiambu County.
The MP noted that the county government has a responsibility to ensure that women are empowered socially, economically and politically.
Addressing women groups at Ruiru town on Sunday, Gathongo said that women are pillars of the society therefore should be considered in development projects.
She stated that empowering women will go a long way in ensuring equality and fairness especially when it comes to access to public resources.
“Governor William Kabogo’s government should ensure that women’s interests are taken care of,” said Gathongo.
She also urged the county government to set aside funds that will empower women and help them take part in development projects.
Gathongo said that women play a critical role in development noting that through their table banking, they have been able to spur development.
The MP said that time has come for women to be active and seek involvement in leadership at both the county and the national government levels.
Gathongo asked fellow women leaders to support programmes that will improve the welfare of women, especially in Kiambu County.
She asked Kiambu County Assembly members to formulate laws and Bills that will promote interests of women, youths and persons with disability.
