The Kisumu County housing department on Tuesday challenged the county government to improve sewer systems as it was prone to spreading diseases.

Speaking at a Kisumu hotel, Kisumu structural and housing officer, Argwings Kodhek, stated that the sewer systems were so poor and needed to be improved by the county government by allocating funds towards modernising them to prevent locals from getting sick.

According to a report that was conducted, the sewer systems were not modified. The locals were forced to empty the sewers themselves which poses as a threat to their health.

“Funds should be allocated towards improving the sewer system as their state worsens especially during the rainy season. When the sewer system is improved, the open trenches of sewer in estates would be curbed leading to improved health status among locals,” said Kodhek.

Housing and structural officer Eunice Njeri also noted that the sewer systems in the region needed improvement.
