The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Kisii County Chairman, Benjamin Onkoba has challenged the county government to fast-track its fire disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies, to ensure town residents are safe from fire outbreaks.

Speaking to journalists in Kisii town, Onkoba regretted that county government's overreliance on water from Kegati water supply station showed how unprepared the County administration was in the fight of fire tragedies in the town.

“We have several firefighting water points in Kisii town and what is remaining is the county government to move swiftly and have such disaster preparedness water points revived to enhance firefighting disasters in the town, instead of rushing to Kegati water supply station with water engines to draw water to put out fire in town,” stated Onkoba

Though the county government had improved in opening up backstreets in the town, Onkoba said that was not enough in terms of fire tragedy preparedness by the County administration, adding that it should up its disaster preparedness.

“The town's physical plan has all the firefighting water points clearly indicated in the plan and what remains is to identify where such points are located and have them revived to enhance firefighting efforts in the town,” added Onkoba.
