Officers from the County Department of Environment, Waste Management and Energy have been working round the clock to ensure garbage piles at the Kongowea market are cleared.
Through the coordination of the area ward administrator Washe Chishenga, the team made over 45 trips in an effort to clear this notorious site on Tuesday.
This follows the recent launch of 12 new garbage trucks by Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho, which is expected to enhance solid waste collection in due time.
The governor flagged off 12 solid waste collection trucks at the Treasury Square flanked by by his Deputy Dr William Kingi' Tourism, Environment and Health CeCs alongside other stakeholders on Friday, April 20th.
He said the trucks would help transport litter from various parts of the city to designated dumping sites.
Each truck has a capacity to transport approximately 20 tonnes of waste per trip.
Joho commended the county staff for ensuring the county is clean despite the dumping challenges, saying there has been tremendous progress in dumping of litter.
“Whatever circumstances, I am grateful to the staff at the county. Certainly there will be a lot of challenges for the government to attain its goals. Whether we like it or not, whether people want to appreciate it or not, there has been tremendous progress unlike in the past,” he said.
Mombasa residents are being urged to dispose off their garbage responsibly bagging them for easier collection, to attain a cleaner and healthier environment and avoid blocking drains.
