Last week, the Public Health department ordered 20 families to vacate from a flat in the estate claiming it was in poor condition.

However, the residents claim there were houses which were in worse state and had not been earmarked for demolition.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday morning, the residents pointed out that they had tried to raise the issue with the department but were dismissed.

They accused city engineers of approving construction of the buildings which were on the water way and the drainage system.

“The houses are built uphill and when it rains, the area gets flooded,” said Peter Wanyoike.

He accused the engineers for being careless.

“They should be doing background checks on the area's topography before approving construction of buildings,” he added.

Pauline Njeri, said they plan to sue the pubic health department over the eviction orders.

“If they cared about the people they should not have approved the buildings in the first place,” she added

However, Chief Public Health Officer Samuel Kingori said the houses were unfit for habitation.

‘The houses were leaking and the toilets in poor condition. We feared that they would collapse any time soon,” he added.
