The County Government of Kiambu has launched chess classes with the aim of engage the youths who are wasted in drug and substance abuse.
Marie Mugo, Youths’ Affairs chief officer in the county, said that the move to introduce chess in the county was part of a plan by the county government to fight the illicit brew and drug abuse.
"We want to encourage the youths in this county to realise their talents and also be able to boost their income. Arresting and also detaining the youths who are caught in illicit brew dens are not solutions to curb the problem," Marie said.
She spoke at her office in Kiambu and noted that last Sunday more than 300 youths participated in a 2 day chess tournament that was held in Thika town.
"On Sunday we had a very huge number of youths who took part in the tournament. We were amazed by the number since we did not expect it to be high. The county government has also included martial arts and canoeing competitions," Marie said.
