The County Government of Mombasa has allocated a number of waste collection trailers to various areas in a bid to tackle the garbage menace in the county.Mombasa Environment CeC Godfrey Nato said the trailers will be stationed at strategic points to enable members of the public to dump garbage in the trucks before it is transported and disposed of in designated dumpsites.County officials on Monday placed several trailers at Lumumba, Mwembe Tayari, Railways and St John’s areas. The CeC said there are plans to place other collection trailers at Mikindani, the government chemist in Kisauni, Pirates Beach in Nyali, Changamwe market and the Likoni fire station.Nato said the collection trailers will be emptied on a daily basis, and urged the public to bag garbage in gunny bags before placing them inside the trailers.“Bagged garbage supports safety and improves efficiency in transporting garbage. It also keeps littered garbage from blocking drainages, helps in maintaining the trucks and saves the environment of unsightly dumps and smell,” said Nato during a public sensitisation forum in Lumumba area.Nato said the environment department in partnership with the University of Nairobi is finalising pilot designs for litter bins which will be placed along Nkrumah road, Digo road, Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue among other streets for daily use by the public.
