The county government of Mombasa has invited bids from private investors to construct water bus stations in various parts of the county.

The county government seeks to roll out a modern transport system by introducing water buses and taxis, in a bid to decongest the city.

Land, planning and housing CeC Anthony Njaramba, said the idea of water buses was initially conceptualized under the county's vision 2035 five months ago, adding that building of jetties that will act as terminus for vessels will begin at English Point Marina, Mkomani.

“We have seen the potential, that is why we wrote it down in our vision and we are confident that it will happen,” said Njaramba.

The county’s vision 2035 outlines a key set of goals that cover seven critical areas meant to transform the region into a super county with a vibrant economy characterized by seamless connectivity, quality living for all residents, clean and well nurtured environment, affordable housing units, and sustainable resource management among others.

Njaramba also noted that Mombasa, being an island, should take advantage of the geographical location to actualize the dream of water transport considering its reliability and efficiency.

“Vision 2035 envisions that people will leave their cars and take public transport because it will be more efficient. You know that a country has developed when people start using public transport instead of their cars,” he said.
