The Mombasa County government has embarked on a campaign to mitigate cholera following the onset of heavy rains in the Coast region. On Tuesday, county officials led by Mombasa sub-county coordinator Abdurrahman Idris who was accompanied by a number of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) took the campaign to Kalahari and ChangamweThe team donated water tanks and supplied fresh water to residents in the areas they visited. The residents were also sensitised on treating drinking water in a bid to avert an outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases. On Monday, the disaster management team led by Mombasa sub-county administrator Irene Muraguri mobilised youths and village elders in clearing drains and disconnecting illegal water and sewer connections, to ensure a smooth flow of water and avoid flooding. The campaign was carried out in Ziwa la Ng’ombe, Kisimani and Mkunguni areas.Residents were also warned against dumping garbage in drainage systems, as this causes flooding whenever it rains.“Make sure you do not dump garbage on waterways. Report anyone who does so for action to be taken against them,” said Idris. The team intends to roll out the awareness campaign in all the six constituencies in the county, to ensure residents are not at risk of contracting waterborne diseases.
