The county government of Kilifi has launched a dairy cattle project that will address the challenge of low farm income as well as food insecurity in the county.The project is also aimed at tackling nutrition problems since Kilifi gets its milk supplies from other counties.Farmers drawn from different wards in the county are also set to benefit from the project as they will receive training in livestock husbandry and different farming methods.Baha Nguma, Kilifi County Agriculture Fisheries and Livestock chief officer said the county has over 134 heifers in 35 wards that cost Sh18 million.“The governor has promised to reduce the levels of poverty as well as empower the people of Watamu economically. We look forward to more milk being produced in this county and the people of Watamu being able to pay school fees for their children,” said Nguma.Nguma said the project will help farmers produce more milk which will in turn improve the county’s economy.The county is also planning on opening a Sh10 million milk collection and cooling plant.
