The county government of Kisumu is putting a raft of measures that will make the region food secure.
The plans are expected to bring to an end challenges that the residents of the area face due to food shortages.
According to the county Executive in-charge of Water, Environment and Natural Resources Ms Loise Akinyi, the county is determined to increase food security in the area especially through the use of irrigation.
This, she said, will be achieved through the promotion of food crops such as sorghum, rice, arrow roots and cassava.
She also said the county through her department will be creating a supportive environment for food production by setting up an Agribusiness Guarantee Fund, developing an agricultural sector growth policy, and strengthening agricultural extension services.
Ms Akinyi added the county government is determined to promote fish farming.
This, she said, is going to be achieved through the promotion of sustainable harvesting of Lake Victoria’s fish stocks and introducing fish farming projects in every ward across the county to meet the ever increasing demand of fish.
"The county government is doing all it can to ensure it is food secure and that our people don’t undergo the suffering they have gone through in the past because we are putting everything in place to make things better for them," said Ms Akinyi.
