The county government of Uasin Gishu has reaffirmed its commitment towards addressing high rate unemployment among youths.

Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago says his administration has put in place measures that will go a long way towards addressing not only unemployment but also other challenges the youth face.

Speaking in Eldoret on Sunday, Mandago pledged to help the youths access funds that will enable them start businesses.

"My government will provide cheap, affordable and accessible credit at an interest rate of 5% P.a to enable those interested in business to pursue them and those with innovative skills to bring them out," Mandago said.

"I will also ensure that the 30 per cent procurement reservation for the youths, women and people living with disabilities is met and exceeded to 50% by 2020," he added.

The governor who is serving his second term in office further said he will continue to equip youth with various skills as demanded by the labour market through sponsored programs.

"We have been sponsoring 60 youths per ward to undertake technical courses at the Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) and we intend to expand the program to other institutions like the Eldoret National Polytechnic and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC)," noted Mandago.

"We recognize that Youth form the biggest percentage of our population," he added.
