The county government of Uasin Gishu will in January vet afresh all bodaboda operators in Eldoret Town and other nearby major urban centres.

The move is aimed at ensuring total compliance with both the county regulations as well as traffic laws.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago said the fresh vetting will also help rid the sector of criminal elements.

Speaking in Eldoret on Sunday, Mandago said the bodaboda sector has been a source of employment for many youths hence the need to streamline it.

"We don't want few people to hide behind others and destroy their source of livelihoods. Criminals must be dealt with so as to allow the bodaboda sector to grow," said the Governor.

"The only way we can ensure genuine people are in the bodaboda business if for each of them to be in a cooperative and this is one of the things we will be looking at in the vetting process," he added.

During the Jamhuri day celebrations, Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan said the majority of the crimes in the county are committed by people who escape using motorbikes.
