The county government of Mombasa is looking into ways of generating energy from garbage.Mombasa Environment and Waste Management CeC Dr Nato Nyongesa on Friday led stakeholders and the department staff in a formal introductory meeting at Tononoka Hall.Dr Nato advocated for teamwork among stakeholders in environmental conservation in the county to ensure the department achieves its goals of transforming Mombasa into a cleaner and greener city.Nato promised the participants of a cordial relationship with the county government and improved working conditions, arguing that the move will be key in propelling the department to greater heights.The Environment CEC also expressed the county government’s determination to start a plant that will convert waste into energy.Nato said the plant is poised to be a long-lasting solution to the county’s garbage menace.“We are looking into a long-term solution to address garbage menace through converting waste into energy but meanwhile, the department is continuing with the rapid programme to clear garbage heaps,” said Dr Nato.The Governor Hassan Joho-led government has been under sharp criticism over its failure to tackle the problem of improper garbage disposal in the county.Poor waste management in the county has been blamed for the recent cholera outbreak in the coastal city.
