Several officers from county governments across the country have enrolled for abattoir instruction and meat inspection classes at Kenya Meat Training Institute in Athi River town.
Addressing Journalists at his office on Monday, the institution's Principal, Dr. James Karitu said that the training is essential for the county government officers to efficiently run their affairs as far as meat industry is concerned.
"Due to demand on the skills, Kenya Meat Training Institute has opened up for county government officers to acquire relevant important skills to effectively and efficiently manage the industry in their respective counties," said Karitu.
Karitu said the training runs between two to six weeks as part time to enable trainees study as they undertake their duties at their stations of work within the counties.
He said the institution trained a team from county government of Turkana on the two courses alongside flaying and hygienic slaughter house operations few weeks ago.
The principal revealed that demand on the training from the counties are overwhelming since most of them have realised that meat industry can highly boost their economies if well managed.
Karitu said majority of the counties are reportedly constructing modern abattoirs to improve meat production and quality both for export and local consumption.
He called on private investors to equally seek the trainings to handle the entire industry with professionalism that it deserves.
