Mombasa County director of communication Richard Chacha has defended Governor Hassan Joho over audit queries raised by the Auditor General Edward Ouko.

Chacha said the issues that were recently raised were addressed when the governor appeared before the Senate in July.

However, The Star reports that officers from the Auditor General's office have affirmed that the reports in question are fresh.

The audit reports presented in September indicate that Mombasa County had four different accounts for the collection of revenue and 22 bank accounts.

The said bank accounts included those owned by the former local authorities, and had a total balance of Sh193.7 million.

“In the circumstances, the validity, accuracy and completeness of the balances amounting to Sh299 million as at June 30 last year could not be ascertained,” read part of the report.

Chacha, however, insists the issues were resolved when Joho's government was cleared by the Senate.

“Initially when we came in, we had not opened any accounts, but now they are not being used since signatories are also not part of the county,” he said.

Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Lamu are among the counties facing audit queries.
