Police in Kisumu are investigating claims by Kisumu County Government’s Finance Chief Officer Sephas Kasera that people believed to be indebted are after his life.
The county official had claimed that he had been informed that contractors were plotting to kill him using hitmen drawn from the outlawed China Squad, a criminal gang in Kisumu.
Nyanza regional coordinator for the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) John Gachomo said the official recorded the statement at the Kisumu Central Police Station on Wednesday.
"We have not made any arrests so far but we are investigating the claims," he said.
Kasera said the contractors had been furious over delayed payments, and were accusing him of being the huddle in their payments.
"I got calls and text messages from people close to me that some contractors were plotting harm against me," he said.
And last week leaflets claiming to name those behind the assassination plot were strewn all over the town.
Police dismissed the leaflets which named Kasera's colleagues in the county government, two people said to be contractors and members of the 'China Squad' gang.
"We do not want to defame people without facts, the leaflet has not named its author," Gachomo said insisting that investigations were on.
Mr Kasera who also admitted having seen the leaflet dismissed the note headlined "deadly, dangerous and most wanted persons within the city" as speculative.
"I have seen it but I cannot comment on it, I have reported the matter to the police and they will do their investigation," he said.
The sensational note read that a sum of Sh200,000 had been given to 10 people to carry out the assassination.
