Officials in Machakos County Government have been cautioned against misusing public resources at the expense of the common mwananchi.

The warning came from residents of Athi River town who claimed certain senior employees at Mavoko sub-county offices were misusing public resources for their own personal benefits.

The locals who addressed the press in Athi River town on Thursday said several vehicles belonging to the county government were being used to trade in personal businesses.

Resident Joseph Odhiambo said some of the newly bought tracks by the government to boost in garbage collection in diverse Mavoko sub-county were being used to transport sand to private premises.

"We cannot close our eyes as the tracks recently bought at Environment and Sanitation department in Mavoko sub-county are used to transport sand to private premises as uncollected litter remains a great menace in the region," said Odhiambo.

Naomi Muite claimed there were a number of government vehicles that were in individuals' hands bearing private number plates.

She said they were part of the vehicles which had been branded and assigned to security team in the entire Machakos county.

Joshua Ondeng' criticized the government for using the resources for individuals' businesses instead of serving purpose they are meant for.

He said it was ridiculous for the vehicles change of usage especially the trucks while residents were living under filthy conditions in all corners of the sub-county.

The residents, all who do various businesses in Athi River town threatened to mobilize other traders to stop remitting taxes to the government if issues of uncollected garbage were not effectively addressed in the next two weeks.
