Auditor General Edward Ouko has said that weak accounting systems in counties are being used by corrupt officials to loot public funds.
According to Ouko, accounting systems in counties ought to be strengthened so as to seal the current loopholes in order to curb further losses.
Speaking at the Garissa regional hub office where he was inspecting construction works, Ouko said his office had tried curb looting of public funds but unco-operative government organs have derailed his efforts.
He singled out the Ethics and Anti-graft Commission and the Judiciary.
“Individuals are exploiting the weak financial and procurement systems to misappropriate and plunder resources at the county levels. Lack of capacity development has fueled the vice,” he said.
The Auditor General also said that audit offices at the counties have played a big role in curbing corruption.
“More measures have to be put in place to fight the vice. Not everybody who is audited is contented. This is why those named in plundering public funds tend to be more defensive,” he added.
The Garissa hub office will help safeguard public resources in the county.
