All Early Childhood Development Centres in Nairobi County have been ordered closed as the devolved unit moves to curb deaths during this rainy season.

The county, through Education Chief Executive Committee member Janet Ouko said allowing nursery school children to go to school when floods sweep across city roads and estates due to heavy rains would be endangering the lives of the children.

"We have decided to close all ECDE learning centres because of the heavy rains," she said while addressing the press in Nairobi on Thursday.

"We have already registered deaths of school children and the only option for us now is to suspend learning in these institutions as we wait for the rains to subside.

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Monday warned of impending heavy floods in Nairobi during to the ongoing rains calling on city residents to take precaution during the rainy period.

By Thursday evening, two primary school children, one in Kajiado and another in Mai Mahiu in Naivasha had died after being swept by the floods. Two others were said to have perished in Voi, Taita Taveta on Friday morning.

Nairobi City residents have had a rough time containing the floods that have disrupted traffic as well as lives in residential areas since the rains began on March 1.
