Members of the Nakuru County assembly on Wednesday passed a bill that will now rein in on the sale and consumption of illicit liquor in the county.

The bill, which was tabled by Turi MCA Michael Wango'mbe, now gives the public mandate to petition for the removal of local area chiefs who fail to fight the sale and consumption of illegal brew.

Wango'mbe, who is also the chairman of the Committee on trade and industry, said the bill will go a long way in the fight against production and consumption of illicit liquor in the county.

“The bill comes at a time when the sale and consumption of illegal brews are on the rise,” said Wangombe.

He expressed his concern at the the way youth in the area have lost their lives as a result of increased cases in consumption of illicit liquor.

“We have lost many of our young people as a result of this and it is high time to bring it to an end,” Wang´ombe said.

Other provisions of the bill include a fine of not less than Sh50,000 imposed for those found producing or consuming illicit liquor.

“The bill will now enhance the National Alcoholic Drinks Control Act popularly known as Mututho law in the ongoing fight against illegal brews," Wang´ome added.

He asked for support from county residents to help in the full implementation of the bill once it is assented into law.
