The Kisumu County health department has promised to create more open defecation free areas in future to help deal with communicable diseases. County Health executive Elizabeth Oigaja said they will work with non-governmental organisations to bring sanity to the villages and encourage locals to use pit latrines to relieve themselves. She said her ministry will help in raising awareness of the need to use pit latrines and not defecate in the open. She said that the efforts of the county in achieving the only open defection free areas in the country are a sign of fruitful results. “Areas like Nyando are some of the open defecation free areas we have managed as a county. We stay committed to ensuring that all villages are made free of open defection menace,” she said. County director of Health Dr Lusi Ojwang said the ministry was working hard to achieve its goals. “Our plan is slow but sure. We envision a city with food eateries properly built and inspected no open defection problems and clean streets. We are sure we are headed in the right direction,” Ojwang said.
