The county government of Uasin Gishu is now asking millers to consider purchasing maize from farmers in the North Rift region.
This is in what the County Executive in charge of agriculture Samuel Yego says will help reduce longs queues still being witnessed at the Eldoret and Moisbridge National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots.
"We are having all these long queues because millers didn't buy any maize this season and we are asking that they come in and help purchase farmers produce," he said.
Speaking after visiting the Eldoret NCPB depot, Yego further warned middlemen masquerading as farmers so as to benefit from the subsidized fertilizer that they would be arrested and prosecuted.
There have been concerns that some of the subsidized fertilizer was being sold to unscrupulous businessmen out to go and repackage so that they can later resell to unsuspecting farmers at a higher price.
"Middlemen should keep off maize or fertilizer queues here at NCPB because if we find subsidized fertilizer in their stores, the culprits will be dealt with accordingly," Yego warned.
The county executive further challenged farmers to join cooperatives so as to be able to pull resources together and minimize expenses that come with operating as an individual.
