The county government of Uasin Gishu has confirmed its preparedness towards the looming El~Nino rains expected this month.

Speaking on Friday, County Secretary Peter Lelei confirmed that the county executive committee is engaging in a series of meetings in a bid to come up with measures to mitigate any disaster that would come with the rains.

According to him, two bills have been tabled in the county assembly and is being discussed by MCAs ahead of the onset of the rains.

“We are on the process of passing a bill, through the county assembly, on setting aside a good amount of money to deal with emergencies, as well as one that seeks to create a clear guideline on how our government will be dealing with various disasters in the future,” he said.

He went further to refute claims among different non-governmental departments and the public that the county lacks a proper mechanism to deal with disasters.

“That is not true and will never be. We are the first county in the country to come up with clear and proper mechanisms in handling disasters. We were so quick to train all stakeholders and engage foreign partners. Our fire engines are also known to serve eight counties,” he added.
