Uasin Gishu county has moved to promote horticulture over grain growing.

The county has partnered with Horticultural commodity development authority, HCDA, to help farmers make the switch and earn more.

HCDA western region director Barnabas Kiptum said the county is nurturing 30 fruit tree nurseries.

He said farmers will be trained on hose handle fruit tree nursery operations.

"We are targeting on issues of how to best manage fruit tree nurseries, rules of propagation, pest and disease management as well as nursery practices", he said.

He said the horticultural sector is more profitable if managed well.

"There is high demand for horticultural products, if nurseries are managed well, the sectors will be very profitable", he added.

Kiptum said planting is easy but maintenance is a challenge for most farmers.

He advised that farmers should be committed especially on looking after the horticultural crops and look for markets for the products before production begins.
