Nakuru County has experienced a reduction in Hiv/Aids prevalence rate in the last five years, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has said.
According to governor the current prevalence rate stands at 5.7% which is a reduction compared to previous figures.
In a speech read by the Nakuru County Health Chief Officer Dr Stephen Mwaura on behalf of the governor, Kinuthia said that the reduction has been made successful by the efforts of county government, private sector and collaboration by the residents
Mwaura was speaking during this year’s commemoration of World Aids day, at Nyayo Gardens, Nakuru town.
“A tremendous effort by the county government, private sector and residents has enabled a reduction of prevalence rate of Hiv/ AIDS”, read the speech.
“An achievement has also been made in the war against Hiv /AIDS through change of behavior by residents that has contributed to low and new infections,” added the speech.
Kinuthia said that the county government had improved the provision of quality healthcare to those affected and created health implementation programmes to fight the disease.
He also said that the county government had engaged in awareness creation especially targeting mother -to-child transmission and rapid use of antiretroviral treatment (ART).
During the occasion the County Health Chief Officer unveiled Kenya AIDS Strategy Framework to fight the prevalence rate of the Hiv/AIDS.
The occasion was also graced by representatives from health department, culture, youth and sports and National Empowerment Network of People Living with Hiv/ AIDs in Kenya (NEPHAK) who advocated for elimination of stigmatization to people living with the virus.
