Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno has warned residents against giving street children handouts.
He said this encourages them to stay in the streets despite moves to take them to rehabilitation centers.
“Residents should refrain from givin strret urchins food stuffs and money since it encourages others to flood our town. As we are talking we have 1,500 street children’s in Eldoret town alone,” he said in Eldoret town, Tuesday.
“We have rolled out a program to clear them from the Central Business District (CBD) through taking them to rehabilitation centers, identifying their parents and also enrolling them in schools to get formal education,” he added.
He also revealed that the county government is taking records of all the street children to know their age, where they come from and if they know their parents.
“We are poised to ensure that cases of street children in the CBD is a thing of the past since they are the main cause of insecurity in our town thus chasing away investors,” noted Chemno.
He, however, warned parents against neglecting their children forcing to end up on the streets saying they will be arrested and charged.
