Speaking during an inspection of the relocation exercise, Governor Anyang Nyong'o said that the land would be used to create an eco- park of indigenous trees and children's playground.

The rehabilitation exercise which is also being funded under the Kisumu Urban Programme (KUP) will cost sh135 million and will include erecting a permanent perimeter wall around the park, an abolition block, and a proper landscaping which will create a model tree nursery and a children's play park.

"We shall embark on rapid planting of indigenous trees and enhance beautification of the park once the Dell work is complete," Doris Ombara the Kisumu City manager stated.

It has been the county's desire to relocate the Kachok dumpsite from the city centre, but the process hit several hurdles with the latest being a case filed by four petitioners urging the court to block the relocation.

The four accused the county government of awarding the relocation tender without carrying out an environmental impact assessment which is mandatory under the act.

Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabir also opposed the relocation of the waste site to his constituency saying it posed a health risk but the Governor assured him that all environmental assessment processes had been completed.
